Macy’s plan is to use their retail space in almost three hundred of their eight hundred plus stores to use for pick and pack fulfillment being operated by staff at each of those locations. The idea is that it will help them control their inventory and turn over more business as compared to their current system. As things had stood previously, once inventory in their online warehouse had run out, they needed to take items off of their website; now they will be able to ship directly from the store location, increasing the number of items they can sell online while eliminating in store inventory that has previously needed to be discounted to clear store shelves.

The Macy’s spokesman acknowledged that using store employees has its drawbacks, and that warehouse fulfillment by employees that are specifically trained in this role is more efficient, but the hope is that the advantages will outweigh the disadvantages and give them more of a return on investment then their previous system. As online sales increase, more and more companies are recognizing the important role that logistics plays in boosting their bottom line.

Current plans include both a full service 300-room hotel and a more exclusive boutique hotel. The developer is reaching out to a variety of restaurants, plans a 14-screen theater, a high-end grocery store featuring organic produce and an extensive selection of prepared foods, and a wide range of stores that offer an entertaining environment.

Office space will be available to businesses that are interested in offering their employees the convenience of access to a self-contained community; the available choices will include 350,000 square feet of space in a 14-story tower, 85,000 square feet of loft space that will be situated above the retail shops, and a 5,000 square foot space appropriate for a bank or similar business.

As for the residential area, there will be luxury rental units available in a choice of one or two bedroom configurations, a townhouse community as well as single family residences in order to appeal to families of all ages and stages of life. Residential amenities will include membership at a community pool, access to a club house, and the enjoyment of large areas of open space, while the rental properties will offer benefits that rival those of fine resorts.

When the property is completed it is expected to draw customers from the immediate community, and due to the unique aspects of the all-in-one design it is already anticipated that it will become a strong competitor for existing Atlanta retail space.

Side dishes are vegetable “medley” (that word does make me roll my eyes, but it’s good), natural-cut fries (which are great), corn cobbette (ditto), breadsticks, and the aforementioned awesome cole slaw and hushpuppies.

For dessert there’s chocolate cream pie and pineapple cream cheese pie. The pineapple cream cheese can be a little gross: stick with the chocolate.

History

Long John Silver’s opened in 1969 in Lexington, Kentucky. Kentucky is still the corporate headquarters.  They had a characteristic blue roof and steeple and Cape Cod theme. When the company filed for bankruptcy in 1998, a lot of things changed. It was purchased and managed by Yum! Brands, Inc. This resulted in many Long John Silver locations being co-branded with KFC or Taco Bell or A&W. In January of 2011, though, Yum! decided to sell Long John Silver’s and A&W. The buyer is LJS Partners LLC.

Long John Silver’s used to be a lot more pirate-oriented. Their Facebook page still makes much of Talk Like a Pirate Day, but the food no longer has pirate-themed names and the décor doesn’t tend to emphasize the whole pirate thing. You’d think, what with the popularity of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies and all. But, kids can still get paper pirate hats.
